The effect, and why it is famous
Naming the ink colour of a word takes measurably longer when the word itself names a different colour. RED printed in blue is harder to answer than BLUE printed in blue, and the difference is large enough to feel.
John Ridley Stroop described it in 1935, and it has become one of the most reproduced findings in psychology — it appears in essentially every population tested, in every language with colour words, and it barely weakens with practice. The reason it is so robust is that reading is automatic. You cannot choose not to read a word you are looking at, so the meaning arrives whether you want it or not and has to be suppressed before you can answer.
Why the score is a difference, not an average
Your raw response time is mostly about how fast you press buttons, how good your mouse is, and how awake you are. None of that is the Stroop effect.
So the score reported here is the interference cost: your average on the conflicting trials minus your average on the matching ones. Both halves share the same button-pressing overhead, so subtracting one from the other cancels it out and leaves the thing being measured.

This is also why the trials are split exactly half and half rather than randomly. Both averages are then computed over the same number of trials every time, so the difference is comparable between runs rather than moving because one half happened to be shorter.
Can you beat it?
You can reduce it, and the tricks tell you something about the mechanism. Defocusing slightly so the word is not legible works. So does looking at a single letter rather than the whole word, or looking slightly to one side of it. All of them work by preventing reading rather than by resisting it.
What does not work is trying harder. The interference is not a failure of effort — it happens before conscious control gets involved, which is precisely why it was interesting enough to still be studied ninety years later.
The colour choices, stated plainly
The palette is red, blue, yellow and purple. Red and green are deliberately not paired, because red-green is the axis of the commonest form of colour blindness and pairing them would make the test unusable for roughly one in twelve men.
Every answer button also names its colour in text next to the swatch, so the controls are readable regardless. But the task itself fundamentally requires distinguishing ink colours, and no palette choice changes that — if you cannot separate these four reliably, the score will not mean anything, and it is better to say so than to hand you a number.

This is not a diagnostic test. Stroop tasks are used in clinical and research settings as one measure among many of executive function and attention. That work uses standardised administration, calibrated equipment and normative data. This is a browser game with twenty trials.
