Are you a visual or a verbal rememberer?
The gap between your two scores is real. What it means is narrower than the learning-styles industry claims.
Take the visual memory test and the verbal memory test in the same sitting and most people find one noticeably easier. That difference is real and reasonably stable. What it means is where things get overclaimed.
Two systems, one bottleneck
The dominant model of working memory splits short-term storage into components: a phonological loop that holds sound-based material and rehearses it by inner speech, and a visuospatial sketchpad that holds shapes and locations. Both are supervised by a limited-capacity central executive.
The evidence for the split is behavioural and specific. Repeating an irrelevant word aloud while trying to remember a list wrecks verbal recall and leaves spatial recall largely alone. Tapping a pattern with your hand does the reverse. If it were one store, interference would not be selective like that.
So a gap between your two scores is not imagination. It reflects which component you lean on, and how well you use it.
What the gap does not mean
It does not mean you are a “visual learner”.
The learning-styles idea — that people learn better when material is presented in their preferred modality — is one of the most tested claims in education, and it has repeatedly failed. The standard test is straightforward: assess people’s stated preference, teach them material in matched and mismatched formats, and see whether the match helps. It generally does not. What matters is whether the format suits the material, not the person.
You can be better at spatial memory and still learn geography best from a map and poetry best from reading it aloud — because a map is spatial information and a poem is verbal information. That is about the content, not about you.
Why most people convert one into the other anyway
The strategies that raise scores usually work by moving the task into whichever system is stronger.
On the sequence test, the most effective technique is naming the positions — “top left, middle, bottom right”. That is a spatial task being solved verbally, and it is why the sequence test and the visual test produce different scores despite both using a grid.
On the verbal test, the most effective technique is the opposite: building a mental image for each new word. Recognition improves markedly when a word has been visualised rather than merely read, which is a verbal task being solved visually.
Both directions work. The useful conclusion is that the systems are recruitable rather than fixed, which is the opposite of what a learning style implies.
What the difference is actually good for
Three things, all modest and all real.
Choosing a strategy quickly. If you know verbal rehearsal is your stronger route, reach for it first on a new memory task rather than discovering it by trial.
Noticing which tests will be noisy for you. Your weaker system will produce a wider spread between attempts, so a single bad run on that test means less.
Understanding a specific frustration. People who are strongly verbal often find the visual test disproportionately annoying, and vice versa. Knowing why is worth something in itself.
What this means for how you study
Narrower advice than the learning-styles industry offers, and more defensible.
Encode material in the form it actually is. A process is a sequence and benefits from being walked through. A structure is spatial and benefits from being drawn. A definition is verbal and benefits from being said. Match the format to the content, not to yourself.
Use your stronger system as a second channel, not the only one. If you are strongly verbal, narrate the diagram after you have drawn it. If you are strongly visual, sketch the argument after you have written it. Encoding the same material twice, in two forms, is reliably better than either alone — and that finding, unlike learning styles, has held up.
Notice which one you default to under pressure. Most people fall back to their stronger system when tired, which is fine unless the material is the wrong shape for it.
Why the difference is stable but not fixed
If you take both tests across a fortnight, the gap between them tends to persist while both scores drift upward. That combination is informative.
The persistence suggests a genuine difference in which system you recruit first. The upward drift is mostly technique — learning to chunk, learning to name positions, learning to visualise words — and technique improves faster than anything underlying.
So the honest description is a preference with real consequences, not a limit. People who deliberately practise the weaker route usually close some of the gap, and nobody closes all of it.
The interference test you can run yourself
The clearest demonstration takes two minutes and needs nothing but your own voice.
Take the visual memory test once normally. Then take it again while repeating a word aloud continuously — “the, the, the” — throughout the pattern display. Most people find the second run barely worse.
Now do the same with the verbal memory test. The repeated word occupies the phonological loop, and performance usually falls noticeably.
That selectivity is the whole argument for two systems rather than one general store. It is also a good demonstration of why “concentrate harder” is not useful advice: the interference is structural, and effort applied to a blocked channel does not unblock it.
Order is a third thing
Worth separating, because it is often lumped in with “visual memory”.
Holding a set of items and holding them in order load differently. The characteristic error in serial recall is not losing an item but swapping two adjacent ones, and errors cluster in the middle of a sequence rather than at either end.
That is why visual memory — where order does not matter — and sequence memory — where it does — separate people who look identical on one of them. Comparing your three scores across all of these tells you more than any single one, which is part of why the daily round runs eight tests rather than one.
Why the tests disagree about you
If your two scores are close, that is as informative as a large gap.
A narrow spread usually means you are converting deliberately — naming positions on the spatial test, visualising words on the verbal one — so both tasks are being solved by whichever system you trust. That is a technique showing up as a result, and it is generally a sign of a practised test-taker rather than of unusual balance.
A wide spread usually means you are letting each task recruit whichever system it naturally addresses. Neither is better, and the difference between the two patterns is mostly how much you have thought about the task rather than anything about your memory.
Worth checking over a fortnight rather than in one sitting: the gap moves as technique develops, and a single pair of scores is a snapshot of the strategies you happened to use that day.
The honest summary
There is a real difference between how well people handle spatial and verbal material, it shows up reliably in these tests, and it is worth knowing about yourself in the narrow practical sense above.
It is not a learning style, it does not predict how you should be taught, and it is not fixed — the strategies that improve either score work by borrowing the other system. Anyone selling you more than that on the strength of two browser tests is selling you something.
